OUTLINE OF PROGRAM • FOCUS ON MIDDLE SCHOOL • TARGET HIGH RISK AREAS • 6TH AND 7TH GRADES • INCREASE PARENTAL SKILLS • SUPERVISE STUDENTS DURING 3 - 6 pm TIME •3:00 pm - 6:00 pm •Latchkey students who spend 10 hours per week unsupervised are at greatest risk of becoming involved in: •Substance Abuse - Ages 12-25 have become the fastest growing group of users of heroin •Violence •Juvenile Delinquency •4:30 pm is the believed conception time for teenage pregnancy. • The Goal of the Maryland National Guards “About Face! Program” is to reduce the incidence and prevalence of violent behavior and substance abuse: while increasing positive parent/youth interaction. • Improve Grades • Improve Attendance • Self Esteem • Self Confidence • Self Discipline • Violent Behavior Modification • Social Skills • Anger Management • Conflict Resolution • Team Building Skills • Substance Abuse Awareness • An After-School Program for the entire school year • Each School 3 days per week, 3:00-6:00 • September thru May • Week long day camps in the summer for continual reinforcement and rewards • PROVIDE SNACKS • HELP WITH HOMEWORK • “Try to make it Fun!!” • DISCUSS GROUP TOPICS • RECREATION AND GAMES • Each School participates in at least one week long summer camp • Pickup and Return to School Daily • Have fun in the country- while learning • Field Trips included • Work with parents to improve parenting skills • Reemphasize: – Social skills - self esteem - team building - leadership skills - self confidence • A school point of contact for the About Face Staff Coordinator… • Use of Gymnasium… • Use of a Classroom • Use of Cafeteria, Library or Audiovisual Center Lieutenant Colonel Bob Danmyer Program Director or Command Sergeant Major Walter L.
