The Governor's Office of CrimeControl and Prevention

The Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention was createdin 1995 by the Governor to address concerns about public safety andthe prevention of crime and substance abuse. The Office formed bymerging functions of the Office of Justice Administration and theGovernor's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission. In January 1997, theOffice was placed under the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Fromthe Cabinet Council on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, the Officereceives policy direction and oversight.

The Office helps draft legislation, policies, plans, programs,and budgets to improve public safety and the administration ofjustice and reduce and prevent crime, violence, delinquency, andsubstance abuse.

For nonprofit community groups and local and State governmentagencies, the Office administers State grant programs, including theMaryland After-School Community Grant Program.
